A calm and welcoming space to support your health and wellbeing.
Welcome to my practice.
With over 14 years' experience as a Holistic Therapist and a BSc (Hons) in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture from the Northern College of Acupuncture, I offer treatments that combine the principles of Chinese acupuncture with a warm, individual approach to care.
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture takes a holistic view of health, recognising that every person is unique. Whether you're seeking support for pain, stress, digestive health, women's health or general wellbeing, I aim to provide a calm and welcoming space where you feel listened to, understood and supported.
Every treatment is tailored to your individual needs and designed to work alongside your body's natural ability to restore balance.
I offer Acupuncture from my practice in Darfield, Barnsley, alongside a range of holistic therapies. Acupuncture is also available at Melanie Marke Acupuncture Clinic in York on Mondays and alternate Saturdays.
If you'd like to find out whether acupuncture could help you, I'd be delighted to welcome you to the clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture feels. The needles are much finer than those used for injections, and while you may feel a brief sensation as the needle is inserted, many people find treatments deeply relaxing.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal, as it makes it easier to access areas such as your arms and lower legs if needed. However, don't worry if that's not possible—treatment can often be adapted to the clothing you're wearing. If access to a particular area is required, your privacy and comfort will always be respected. I have towels and blankets available to ensure you remain covered throughout your treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed varies from person to person and depends on the nature of your condition, your overall health and your treatment goals.
Acupuncture works cumulatively, meaning the effects often build over a course of treatment. For long-standing or chronic conditions, it's commonly recommended to begin with around 4–6 treatments, usually spaced fairly close together, before reviewing your progress. As your symptoms improve, treatments can often be spaced further apart, with occasional maintenance sessions if needed.
At your first appointment, we'll discuss your individual needs and agree on a treatment plan that's right for you. There is never any obligation to book a course of treatments, and we'll review your progress together as we go.
Is acupuncture safe?
When carried out by a fully qualified practitioner, acupuncture is considered to be very safe. I am trained in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, registered with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), and use sterile, single-use disposable needles for every treatment.
As with any healthcare treatment, there can be some minor side effects, such as slight bruising, temporary soreness or feeling tired after treatment. These are usually mild and short-lived. Before your first appointment, we'll discuss your medical history and any questions or concerns you may have to ensure treatment is appropriate for you.
Can I claim through private health insurance?
Many private health insurance policies include cover for acupuncture provided by a British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) registered practitioner.
As policy terms vary, it's always worth checking with your insurer before treatment to confirm your level of cover and whether a GP referral is required. You can find more information on the British Acupuncture Council website.
